Specific licensing/regulatory requirements relating to the following competencies, including requirements for refresher training, should be obtained from the relevant national/state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authorities.
This unit provides students with the skills and knowledge required to test the working atmosphere by using electronic test apparatus to find out if it is safe for the proposed work, and applies to situations where gas testing must be carried out before entering a specific area or workspace. The competency requires the interpretation of readings and for action to be taken based on that interpretation.
This unit is suitable for use in situations such as:
This unit provides students with the skills and knowledge required to work in accordance with an issued permit, enabling people working under a permit to understand the system and limitations of the permit, and comply with the requirements of it. Some organisations may refer to a ‘permit’ as a ‘clearance’, and refer to people who this unit applies to as ‘permit recipients’ or ‘permit holders’.
This unit covers the skills and knowledge needed to undertake the role of a safety observer for permits that require one. Safety observers, also called a ‘hole watcher’ or ‘fire watcher’, can stop permit work, but do not have the authority to restart it.
Note that when a person is a safety observer for a confined space permit, they should also be competent in confined space entry.
